Incandescent lamps being phased out
- Details
- Created on Monday, 09 April 2012 19:05
As a result of escalating climate change and energy use concerns, governments from around the world are committed to getting rid of highly inefficient incandescent lamps
- especially as LED and energy efficient bulbs are proving more cost-effective and similarly effectual in light distribution.
Making lighting more energy efficient is crucial to the fight against increasingly severe climate change and the aim of the phase-out of the incandescent lamp (mostly GLS) is to force greater use of better alternatives, which can be more expensive initially, but guarantee massive savings in running costs.
Investigations by lighting industry associations (such as CELMA) show that in Europe, 60% of today’s lighting installations are inefficient and 75% of office and industrial installations are still fitted with conventional luminaries.
Phase-out of incandescent lighting in the UK commenced on September 1st 2009, with restrictions on selling GLS, frosted incandescent and non-clear halogen lamps of 100W and above. From that date, manufacturers cannot legally produce or sell such lamps and wholesalers can only fulfil existing orders until stocks run out.
Every year more lamps such as Dicroic, metal halide, son-t and halogen will be phased out until 2016, when only a very few highly specialised types will remain.
